Surface preparation, what is it ? 

Also known as sandblasting, surface preparation is the treatment process that increases the adhesion of the surface in order to apply a coating: adhesive, paint, etc. The performance and durability of coatings are directly related to the quality of the surface preparation. This can be done mechanically or chemically. 

The most frequently prepared surfaces are :

Surface preparation methods include : 


Chemical cleaning 


Before using any surface preparation method, it is essential to perform a chemical cleaning, which consists of removing dirt, oil, grease and other foreign matter using organic solvents or detergents. 

Mechanical cleaning 

There are two types of cleaning: mechanical cleaning by hand and mechanical cleaning with machines. Residue deposits, rust and old paint layers that do not adhere well can be removed by manual brushing, sanding, scraping and peeling. However, these methods are incomplete and always leave a strongly adherent layer of rust on the surface. Power tools include rotary wire brushes, sanding discs and needle guns. Mechanical cleaning with a machine is generally more effective and less laborious than manual cleaning. 

Cleaning with pressurized water 

Cleaning with water is always useful to remove salts, dirt, loose paint and other residues. 

Cleaning with an abrasive blast  

Blast cleaning is based on the principle of an abrasive blast of particles in a stream of compressed air hitting the surface, removing dirt, scale, rust and old paint. Abrasive blast cleaning is the most complete and widely used method of surface preparation in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry.
