RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. This system uses radio waves to read or send information wirelessly from a distance. An RFID system consists of a chip or tag that contains unique information about a person or object to which it is attached. The information is read by an RFID reader and then processed by interpretation software.   
  
There are two main types of RFID systems, passive and active.

    Passive RFID system  

      
    In passive RFID systems, the reader and antenna send a radio signal to the chip. The passive RFID chip has no power source, but is activated by receiving the waves emitted by the reader and antenna. They only need a microprocessor and an antenna and are cheaper, smaller and easier to produce than active chips.   
      
    Passive chips can be integrated in different ways, depending on the specific RFID application requirements. For example, they can be integrated between an adhesive layer and a paper label to make smart RFID tags. Passive chips can also be integrated into many devices or packages to protect the chip from extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals. This is an example of a durable chip.  
      

    Active RFID system  

      
    In active RFID systems, it is the chip that sends a radio signal to the reader and antenna.  The chips have their own transmitter and power source, in most cases a battery or solar cell. To protect the battery life, they send radio signals at adjustable times. In addition, they are considerably more expensive compared to passive chips. Gateways receive active chip signals and have the ability to track the location of the chip in real time (and thus the object to which it is attached).  
      
    The big advantage of RFID systems is their reading range. They are indeed systems which are based on the waves, which implies that the zone of reading of the RFID reader is much larger than a traditional bar code reader, which can point only one at the same time. It is thus possible for a RFID chip scanner to scan several chips simultaneously in a more or less large area, depending on the performance of your reader and your chips.   
      
    For these same reasons, they are also easier to automate. Mount your reader and antenna wherever you want and you just have to scroll the chips in front of it, whether they are active or passive.
