Regulation ECE 104
The guidelines for the use of high visibility retroreflective markings on long and heavy vehicles in Europe are established by the regulation ECE 104 and by the regulation No. 48.
From July 2011, according to European law, all newly registered HGVs (>7.5t GVW) and trailers (>3.5t GVW) will need to be equipped with retroreflective markings which meet the requirements of ECE 104. The regulation applies to the following vehicle categories : N2, N3, O3 and O4.
ECE 104 reflective marking
The ECE 104 compliant high visibility marking is a 50 to 60 mm wide retroreflective film, which is applied on trucks and trailers. It clearly outlines the rear and the sides of the vehicle. Etilux proposes you the following 3M products : 3M Diamond Grade 987 for application on curtain-sides and 3M Diamond Grade 983 for application on rigid surfaces.
Application
The regulation also specifies how the vehicle contours must be marked.
Rear of the vehicle
A complete yellow or red contour marking needs to be applied on vehicles exceeding 2100 mm in width.
Sides of the vehicle
There are two options : either a complete contour line marking or a partial contour line marking. Partial contour marking is the minimum requirement. White or yellow marking tapes can be used on the sides.
The marking shall be as close as practicable to the ends of the vehicle and reach to within 600 mm of each end of the vehicle and the cumulative horizontal length shall equate to at least 80 per cent of the overall width of the vehicle in the following cases:
- for motor vehicles, each end of the vehicle (excluding the cab)
- for trailers, each end of the vehicle (excluding the drawbar)
If it can be proved to the authority responsible for type approval that it is impossible to cover 80% of the cumulative length, it may be reduced to 60%.

Those highly retroreflective sheetings consist of microprismatic lenses formed in a durable transparent resin, sealed in a synthetic film and backed with a pressure sensitive adhesive with a protective liner.
3M Diamond Grade 983 marking is designed to mark the sides and rear (lines or contours) of rigid trucks or trailers. While 3M Diamond Grade 987 marking is designed to mark the sides and rear (lines or contours) of curtain-sided trucks or trailers.
They have an excellent angularity (in both horizontal and vertical) that allows them to be seen at angles up to and beyond 60º from perpendicular.
This feature is important in traffic, when vehicles maneuver or when they are parked.
Those tapes are edge-sealed to prevent damage due to dirt.
